The Barn Owl has become one of Irelands most endangered wild bird species in recent decades due to reduced nesting sites in the natural Irish landscape. Potential nesting sites have become greatly reduced as modern building and construction techniques become more advance and older buildings are repaired.

Hanging a Barn Owl Nest Box will greatly help this impressive nocturnal bird,  by providing them with a safe nest site.

This nest box is designed to provide a dark nesting place for Barn owls and their chicks. In addition, a partition inside the nest box prevents access by predators such as cats and Pine martens while also creating additional darkness.

A hinged door on the side of the nest box allows for cleaning after a few years. The nest box should only be cleaned in Winter when the debris is above a depth of 3 inches. Cleaning the nest box in Winter will ensure you avoid disturbance to resident Barn Owls. Cleaning is unnecessary every year, and it may take many years before any cleaning needs to be conducted. 

Barn Owl nest boxes should be erected at least 5-7m from the ground and have a direct flight path to the entrance hole. Many barn Owl nest boxes are situated in farmyard sheds and buildings. They can also be placed high in a large tree or an attic if there is access from the outside.

Ideally, the nest box should be placed facing North or East and have good views over the surrounding landscape.
