Holly (Ilex aquifolium)

Holly is one of Ireland’s most iconic native evergreen trees, valued for its year-round structure, rich wildlife benefits, and timeless character. With its deep green, glossy leaves and naturally dense form, Holly brings colour and shelter to the garden in every season.

In spring, small white flowers support pollinators, while in autumn and winter female plants produce the familiar bright red berries, an important food source for birds when other supplies are scarce. Its evergreen foliage also provides excellent year-round shelter and nesting cover.

Supplied in convenient 9cm pots, these young Holly plants are easy to establish and well suited to gardens, hedging, woodland edges, and mixed native planting schemes. Holly thrives in well-drained soil and grows happily in sun or partial shade. Slow-growing and long-lived, it requires minimal maintenance once established.

Whether used as a specimen plant, clipped hedge, or part of a wildlife-friendly landscape, Holly is a classic native choice that adds structure, resilience, and biodiversity value to Irish gardens.

Why plant Holly?

  • Evergreen structure year-round – provides colour, shelter, and visual interest in all seasons

  • High wildlife value – flowers for pollinators and winter berries for birds

  • Native Irish species – an important part of traditional woodland and hedgerow planting

  • Ideal for hedging or feature planting – suitable for gardens, boundaries, and mixed native schemes

  • Hardy and low maintenance – slow growing, resilient, and easy to care for once established

  • Supplied in 9cm pots – convenient size for planting and establishment

Good to know: berries on Holly plants

Holly plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce berries, and they require a male plant nearby for pollination. Young plants supplied in 9cm pots are not yet in flower, so their sex cannot be identified at this stage.

For gardens or hedges where berries are desired, planting a mix of Holly plants or including an established male Holly in the wider area will help ensure good berry production over time.
