Wild Cherry (Prunus avium)
Wild Cherry is a beautiful native deciduous tree, valued for its early spring blossom, rich wildlife benefits, and strong seasonal character. In March and April, clouds of delicate white flowers appear on bare branches, providing an important early nectar source for bees and other pollinators emerging from winter.
As the seasons progress, fresh green leaves form a soft canopy, followed in summer by small cherries that are eagerly taken by birds and wildlife. In autumn, the foliage turns warm shades of gold and orange, bringing a final burst of colour before leaf fall.
Reaching up to 9 metres (30ft) at maturity, Wild Cherry is best suited to larger gardens, orchards, parks, and rewilding or native planting schemes. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and is hardy in Irish conditions, requiring little ongoing maintenance once established.
Whether planted as a specimen tree or as part of a wildlife-friendly hedge or landscape, Wild Cherry is a classic native choice — supporting biodiversity, enhancing seasonal interest, and contributing to Ireland’s natural woodland character.
