The shortage of natural nesting sites in the Irish countryside is one of the most significant factors behind the decline of some of our once most-common Irish wild birds.
Offer our declining species a safe nesting place by hanging a nest box to replicate a wild bird’s natural nesting preference and encourage them to breed near your home.
Wrens are one of the smallest birds in Ireland and one of the most difficult to see. Increase your chances of attracting the wonderful ren by hanging a nest box that replicated its natural nesting preference. This rustic nest box has been designed especially for Wrens.
Wrens are timid wild birds, often found hiding in quiet shrubbery. When positioning your nesting box, choose a quiet garden area near some dense shrubbery with little human traffic and away from bird feeders. Hang the nest box at least 1.5m from the ground, out of direct sunlight and prevailing wind and rain. Ensure the birds have a direct flight path to the nest box.
The Wren will use the nest box to shelter from the elements typical to the Irish climate in winter. Wrens tend to nest together, so you can expect that this next box will be home to many wrens at once. A gardener recently found 61 Wrens in one nest box in the UK.
Other small wild birds, like the Wagtail, will also use this style of nest box.
This nest box is constructed using FSC approved pine and has a sturdy bitumen roof, giving it a robust structure to serve as a home for many years to come. A door on the side of the box allows for easy cleaning in the Autumn.
