Forager’s Selection – Irish Native Trees (Bare-root)

All bare-root whips are 40–80cm in height at delivery and 1–2 years old, making them ideal for strong establishment and long-term growth.

The Forager’s Selection is a carefully chosen mix of native Irish trees and shrubs that deliver spring blossom followed by an abundance of edible fruit and berries from late summer into autumn. It’s designed for gardeners who want to reconnect with traditional foraging while supporting wildlife and biodiversity.

  • Wildlife-friendly – flowers for pollinators and fruit for birds and mammals

  • Flexible planting – suitable for boundaries, screening, or informal garden planting

  • Native Irish provenance – species selected to thrive in Irish conditions

What you can forage

  • Blackthorn – sloes for sloe gin and preserves

  • Crab Apple – perfect for jellies and conserves

  • Rowan – traditional rowan jelly and preserves

  • Wild Cherry – small, juicy cherries enjoyed fresh or by wildlife

(Always forage responsibly and leave plenty for birds and other wildlife.)

Where to plant

Suitable for gardens of all sizes, including:

  • unused corners of the garden

  • boundary planting or informal hedges

  • screening areas such as oil tanks or sheds

  • planting trees sporadically for a natural, relaxed look

This mix creates shelter and privacy while helping you feel more connected to the living landscape around you.

How to plant bare-root native trees

  • Plant at a minimum of 3 plants per metre

  • For a denser hedge, plant in two staggered rows, up to 5 plants per metre

  • Place shrubs (such as Blackthorn) mainly in the back row, with tree species towards the front

  • For a natural effect, plant trees at random spacing rather than in straight lines

Storage on delivery

If you are not ready to plant within six days of delivery:

  • Heel in the plants by covering roots with damp soil or sand

  • Keep them cool, shaded, and moist until planting

Blackthorn | Rowan | Crab Apple | Guelder Rose | Wild Cherry
