Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)
Hawthorn is one of Ireland’s most familiar and important native hedgerow species, valued for its dense growth, resilience, and outstanding wildlife benefits. Supplied as 2-foot bare-root whips, it establishes quickly and is ideal for creating strong, long-lasting boundaries.
In late spring, Hawthorn produces a profusion of white blossom, providing a rich nectar source for pollinators. These flowers are followed in autumn by deep red berries (haws), which are an essential food source for birds and other wildlife as they prepare for winter.
Naturally tough and adaptable, Hawthorn thrives in a wide range of soil types and conditions. It responds exceptionally well to cutting and shaping, making it one of the most widely used species for hedging on farms, rural boundaries, and wildlife-friendly garden planting.
