A Classic Single Dahlia with Outstanding Pollinator Value

Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ is one of the most trusted single-flowered dahlias for wildlife-aware gardens. From midsummer through to the first frosts, it produces vivid scarlet-red flowers with a clearly exposed golden centre, held above deep bronze foliage. This open flower form makes pollen and nectar easily accessible, drawing steady visits from bees, hoverflies and butterflies.

Its exceptionally long flowering season means ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ provides reliable late-summer and early-autumn forage, helping to bridge a critical gap when many other plants are finishing.

Why We’ve Chosen Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’

  • Excellent Pollinator Support – Open-centred single flowers allow easy access to pollen and nectar.

  • Long Flowering Window – Blooms from July until frost, extending food availability late into the season.

  • High Visibility to Insects – Dark foliage contrasts strongly with bright flowers, helping pollinators locate blooms.

  • Low-Input & Productive – Flowers continuously with regular deadheading and minimal intervention.

  • A Proven Garden Performer – Reliable, vigorous and well suited to borders and informal wildlife planting.

Biodiversity-Led Growing Tips

Plant tubers in spring once the risk of frost has passed, in well-drained soil and a sunny position. Regular deadheading encourages fresh flowers and prolongs nectar supply for pollinators.

Allow plants to flower for as long as possible into autumn. After the first frost, lift and store tubers over winter to ensure strong growth and flowering the following year.
