Ireland’s Trees: Myths, Legends & Folklore

By Niall Mac Coitir

The Magical History of Ireland’s Native Trees

Discover the ancient stories and enduring symbolism of Ireland’s native trees — from sacred groves and fairy thorns to healing woods and protective charms.

In this beautifully illustrated and deeply engaging book, Niall Mac Coitir brings to life the myths, legends and folklore surrounding Ireland’s trees, revealing how they have shaped Irish culture and spirituality for millennia.

Two main themes emerge through his storytelling: trees as markers of sacred and royal places, such as holy wells and ancient forts, and trees as sources of magical power, used in charms, rituals and seasonal celebrations. Learn how carrying a blackthorn staff was once thought to ward off evil spirits, and how the oak, ash and hawthorn were revered in folklore and tradition.

Blending mythology, history, and natural heritage, this enchanting guide will delight readers interested in Ireland’s wild landscapes, Celtic tradition, and living connection to the natural world.
