Late-Autumn Colour with Pollinator Value
Nerine bowdenii, often known as the Guernsey Lily, is a standout autumn-flowering bulb selected for its exceptional late-season flowering and contribution to biodiversity when few plants remain in bloom. This mixed selection produces elegant clusters of crimped, spider-like flowers in a jewel-toned palette of soft pinks, vibrant raspberry hues and silvery whites, rising on leafless stems above the soil just as the garden begins to quieten.
Flowering from September through November, Nerine bowdenii plays an important supporting role for pollinators active late in the year, providing fresh nectar at a time when floral resources are scarce. Its open, lightly scented blooms are readily accessible to bees and other beneficial insects, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-aware borders and containers.
Why We’ve Chosen Nerine bowdenii
-
Late-Season Nectar Source – Flowers into autumn, extending forage availability well beyond summer.
-
Distinctive Flower Form – Open, spider-like blooms accessible to pollinators.
-
Resilient & Low-Input – Tolerates dry conditions and is largely ignored by deer and rabbits.
-
Ideal for Containers – Thrives in pots and tight spaces, perfect for patios and small gardens.
-
Long-Term Performer – Increases flowering year on year when left undisturbed.
Biodiversity-Led Growing Tips
Plant bulbs in spring in a sunny, free-draining position. Nerines prefer to be planted shallowly, with the neck of the bulb sitting just above the soil surface. Unlike many bulbs, they flower best when slightly crowded and resent disturbance.
Once planted, leave bulbs undisturbed and allow clumps to develop naturally. This not only improves flowering over time but also creates a reliable, repeat source of late-season nectar for pollinators adapting to shorter days and cooler conditions.
Did you know?
Autumn-flowering bulbs like Nerine are increasingly valuable in wildlife-friendly gardens, helping to bridge the gap between late summer blooms and the onset of winter dormancy.
