Sorbus aucuparia, more commonly known as Rowan or Mountain Ash, is a small to medium size tree. Producing attractive creamy white flowers in Spring, and masses of vibrant red berries in the Autumn, the Rowan is a crucial food tree for pollinators and birds.
Due to its size, the Rowan is perfect for smaller gardens and can also be used to great effect as part of a tree lined avenue. It is a very robust tree and grows well on higher locations and exposed sites.
It has no preference for soil fertility and will grow just as well on nutrient poor soils as well as rich fertile soils as long as they are not waterlogged.
In Irish folklore the Rowan was sown close to homes to protect them from troublesome spirits. The old Celtic name of Rowan was ‘Fid na nDruad’ or Tree of the Druids, signifying the important magic power that people believed this tree possessed.
When planting these bareroot trees, leave a minimum of two meters between each tree.
