Architectural Summer Colour with Pollinator Value

Agapanthus ‘Dr. Brouwer’ is a refined, deciduous perennial selected for its strong structure, rich blue colouring and meaningful value to pollinators during the height of summer. From mid to late summer, it produces elegant globes of trumpet-shaped flowers held high on sturdy stems, each floret a deep mid-blue marked with a darker violet vein that adds depth and movement in sunlight.

While Agapanthus is often grown for its architectural presence, this variety also plays an important supporting role in biodiversity-focused gardens. Its nectar-rich flowers are readily visited by bees and butterflies at a time when consistent forage is essential, helping to sustain pollinators through July and August.

As a deciduous and notably hardy variety, ‘Dr. Brouwer’ is particularly well suited to Irish gardens, offering the Mediterranean look with greater resilience. Its strap-like green foliage forms a neat, attractive mound, adding year-round structure without overwhelming surrounding planting.

Why We’ve Chosen Agapanthus ‘Dr. Brouwer’

  • Mid–Late Summer Nectar Source – Flowers during peak pollinator activity, providing reliable nectar for bees and butterflies.

  • Strong Architectural Form – Tall flower stems and tidy foliage bring structure and height to borders and containers.

  • Hardy & Deciduous – More cold-tolerant than evergreen forms, returning reliably year after year.

  • Low-Input Performer – Thrives in full sun with minimal maintenance once established.

  • Versatile Planting – Works equally well in mixed borders, coastal gardens and large patio containers.

Biodiversity-Led Growing Tips

Plant in a sunny, well-drained position to encourage strong flowering and the deepest blue colour. Agapanthus performs particularly well in containers, where slight root restriction encourages flowering rather than excess leaf growth.

Allow flower heads to fully open to maximise nectar availability for insects. Combining Agapanthus with other pollinator-friendly summer plants helps create layered, season-long forage and visual interest.

Did you know?
In a changing climate, resilient plants matter. Deciduous Agapanthus cope better with wet winters and variable conditions, making them a dependable, low-input choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.
