Advice Before Purchase

When selecting a nest box for birds of prey, it’s important to consider a range of factors. Please note that barn owls are a protected species in Ireland. Inspections during the breeding season can only be carried out by someone with the proper licence. Maintenance and cleaning can be done outside of breeding periods.

Installation and Safety Guidance

Installing your barn owl box requires careful planning. Ensure it is securely fixed in place, with appropriate safety measures for handling its weight and positioning. Here are some essential points:

  • Weight and Positioning: Plan how to lift and secure the box safely.
  • Fixing Points: Use strong and reliable fastenings for both the top and bottom of the box.
  • Assistance and Protection: Have someone assist during installation and use protective gear where needed.

Choosing the Right Location

Barn owls prefer open farmland and grassy areas abundant with small mammals such as field voles and wood mice. Whether you’re installing indoors or outdoors, consider these tips:

Indoors (e.g., barns):

  • Position as high as possible with at least 18 inches of clearance between the box and roof.
  • Ensure clear flight paths to the box’s entrance.
  • Choose areas with minimal disruption from irregular human activity.

Outdoors (e.g., trees or buildings):

  • Install on suitable trees or poles with open visibility and a clear flight path.
  • Position the box’s entrance facing East, North-East, or South-East to avoid prevailing winds.
  • Ensure the box is between 3–5 metres (10–16 feet) above ground and away from hazards like water-filled ditches.

Maintenance and Monitoring

Routine inspection outside the breeding season (November–January) ensures the box remains safe and inviting. Here are a few guidelines:

  • Clear out any debris such as twigs or leaves, but leave a small number of owl pellets for natural nesting material.
  • Always wear protective gloves and a dust mask when handling the box.
  • Avoid disturbances during the first year to help owls settle.

Signs of Occupancy: Look for owl pellets, droppings, or activity around the box at dusk.

Protecting Barn Owls

In Ireland, barn owls are protected under the Wildlife Acts. It is illegal to disturb them during the breeding season without a licence. Maintenance and checks should be conducted during the non-breeding period.

By following these guidelines, your barn owl nest box can become a safe and welcoming space for these magnificent birds to thrive in Ireland’s countryside.
