Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)

Blackthorn is a hardy native Irish shrub, widely used in traditional hedgerows for its dense, thorny growth and exceptional wildlife value. One of the earliest flowering species in the landscape, it produces a profusion of delicate white blossom in early spring, providing an important nectar source for pollinators emerging from winter.

As the seasons progress, Blackthorn forms a thick, protective structure ideal for nesting birds and small mammals. In autumn, it produces deep blue-black fruits known as sloes, which are valued both by wildlife and for traditional foraging.

Supplied as bare-root whips, Blackthorn establishes quickly and is particularly well suited to boundary planting, hedgerows, and wildlife-friendly garden schemes. It thrives in a wide range of soil types and conditions and is especially effective when planted as part of a mixed native hedge.

Naturally vigorous and resilient, Blackthorn responds well to management but can also be left to grow more freely where space allows, creating a strong, natural barrier.

Why plant Blackthorn?

  • Excellent for hedging – dense, thorny growth creates strong natural boundaries
  • Early spring blossom – vital nectar source for pollinators
  • Supports wildlife – provides shelter for birds and fruit for autumn feeding
  • Native Irish species – a key component of traditional hedgerows
  • Hardy and adaptable – thrives in a wide range of soils and conditions
  • Supplied as bare-root whips – ideal for hedge establishment
