Our Foragers Selection of Irish native bare-root trees will bring blossom with flowers from spring and by late summer your garden will have an abundance of fruit, berries and nuts to forage.

Suitable for all gardens, whether it's an unused corner of the garden, a strip to hide an oil tank, a boundary marker or perhaps you wish to plant them sporadically around the garden.

  • Wild crab apples make a delicious jelly and conserves.
  • Use sloes from the blackthorn to make sloe gin.
  • The fruits of the Rowan make a popular traditional jelly.
  • Wild cherry will be laden with juicy red cherries.
  • Harvest fresh hazelnuts from the Hazel to eat fresh or store for winter use.

Growing Irish native hedging is a wonderful way to support biodiversity and feel closer to the natural and living world while creating a shelter and privacy in your garden.

How to plant bare-root Irish native hedging species

Plant the trees at a minimum rate of 3 plants per meter. To create a more dense hedge, plant the trees in two staggered rows with a maximum of 5 plants per meter. Shrubs such as Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Hazel, and should be sown mostly in the back row, with the tree species sown in front.

For a natural effect, sow the tree species at random rather than at defined spacings.

Bareroot species included; Blackthorn, Hazel, Crab Apple, Wild Cherry.

If you are not ready to plant within six days of receiving the plants, heel them in; i.e. cover the roots with damp sand or soil to keep them cool, damp and in good health until you are ready to plant.
