All of the bareroot hedgerow species included in the Traditional Irish native Hedgerow Mix are of local provenance to Ireland.

Irish native hedgerow species included: Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Hazel, Birch, Crab Apple, Guelder Rose, Wild Cherry, Holly.

This mix of native bare root hedging species has been selected to support Irish biodiversity in your garden, or on-farm and provide a living boundary between properties, protection from strong winds, and privacy around your home.

From an environmental point of view, this hedgerow mix will help remove dust and pollutant particles from the air while also helping to improve soil and water quality.

Hedgerows also create the perfect conditions for many Irish native plant species, of which some are in danger of extinction, these endangered plant species include Irish native wildflowers, some of Irelands oldest native plants.

The bareroot Irish native species included in this mixture are suitable for planting a new hedge or adding to an already existing hedge.

How to plant an Irish Native Hedge

Plant the bareroot trees at a minimum rate of 3 plants per meter. To create a more dense hedge, plant the trees in two staggered rows with a maximum of 5 plants per meter. Shrubs such as Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Hazel, and Gueldar Rose should be sown mostly in the back row, with the tree species sown in front.

For a natural effect, sow the tree species at random rather than at defined spacings.

Management of an Irish Native Hedge

Allow the trees and the Holly in this Irish native hedgerow mix to grow to maturity without pruning. Tree species included: Birch, Crab Apple, Rowan and Wild Cherry.

Allow the shrub species to grow for two years without pruning. Then prune every two years to shape the hedge and prevent gaps from forming at the base. The second pruning of a new hedge is essential to promote fresh and dense growth at the base of each plant.  Shrub species included: Guelder Rose, Hazel, Hawthorn and Blackthorn.

Storage

If you are not ready to plant within six days of receiving the plants, heel them in; i.e. cover the roots with damp sand or soil to keep them cool, damp and in good health until you are ready to plant.
